The following is a check list to assist you in obtaining your dealer license. Do each step and you will find that becoming a dealer is not as hard as you may think. Each item will be explained in detail at Dealer Training School.
1. THE INITIAL FEE for licensing for most dealer applicants is $300. If you are applying for a MH (mobile home) or an RV (recreational vehicle) license, the initial fee is $340. If you are not a resident of Florida, the Initial fee is $2000.
2. AN OWNER OR OFFICER of your company must attend a state approved school for dealer licensing. The certificate given is good for 6 months. We have classes all over the state so it is easy to attend.
3. LEASE: (True Copy, must show exact address and name of dealership signed by lessee and lessor). You would be foolish to sign a lease before the location was approved by DMV and by your local zoning authorities.
4. IF PROPERTY IS OWNED, need proof by copy of Deed, Title or Tax Receipt with a legal document breaking down the legal description, address, and be sure to show the date the property was acquired.
5. PHOTOGRAPHS of proposed location (2 photos 3x4 showing front and one side, and back and other side) also include public entrance & display parking & sign showing name of dealership. No longer required, but may be asked for by local DMV office.
6. SURETY BOND: MV $25,000. Must have original bond & power of attorney. Irrevocable Letter of Credit may be used by MV dealers ONLY - must be on DMV form, issued on a Florida Bank, no alterations or changes & must have original. (Bond application available at MVDTI school.)
7. FICTITIOUS NAME: Advertise in Newspaper, then register name with Secretary of State using application supplied by MVDTI. Attach a copy of Fictitious Registration with dealer application. Not necessary if using exact corporate name.
8. PARTNERSHIP OR CORPORATION: attach copy of Partnership Agreement if applicable. If CORPORATION: Copy of Articles Of Incorporation, attachments and copy of Registration from Secretary of State. If officers have ever changed, include Copy of Corporate Minutes showing all officers & their titles .
9. FEIN: Federal Employee Identification Number may be obtained from IRS (form available from MVDTI). You may sign a Waiver if you are a proprietership or partnership with NO employees.
10. SALES TAX NUMBER: Issued by Department of Revenue. Form available from MVDTI.
11. GARAGE LIABILITY STATEMENT: Must indicate that you have a minimum of 25,000 garage liability and 10,000 of PIP. Your insurance agent will provide the form to you. Just sign it, have it notarized and submit it. All insurance products are made available to you when you attend the school.
12. DISPLAY EXACT DEALERSHIP NAME: in a color & size visible 50 yds from Street of access. Must display hours of operation on door if licensed for retail sales.
13. OFFICE REQUIREMENTS: An office with a minimum of 100 square feet must be maintained. You may not use a residence. It must contain a filing cablinet and writing surface. Ceiling must be minimum of 7 feet tall.
14. DISPLAY SPACES: To sell at retail you must have a sufficient number of display spaces to contain the vehicles you intend to sell.
15. FINGERPRINT CARDS: Every owner or officer must be fingerprinted. The cost is $47 per person. You must use cards provided by DMV. Get it done at a local police station or authorized provider. Only use black ink.
